Sarah is our current contact for Bridge at AWA. We would like to thank her for graciously providing us this interview opportunity.
Q. How many times have you participated in Pesta Sukan?
A: We played in Pesta Sukan for the first time last year and have entered a team for this year.
Q. Give us a memorable moment that happened in last year's Pesta Sukan event, on or off the table.
A: Meeting other players from Singapore that we have met lots at other bridge events since then. Playing bridge with people from overseas is a great experience.
The level of organisation and skill of the team running the event was excellent and quite something to watch in action.
Q. How did your club prepare for the event? Or is your primary objective to come to enjoy the game? (no right/wrong answer)
A: We had a couple of sessions with a Bridge Teacher to develop our knowledge of IMP scoring and to hone our skills to be ready to play Teams.
Q. Some people think Pesta Sukan is only for very serious or competitive players — what would you say to that?
A: Pesta Sukan is great fun and the standard is very high but it is also an amazing experience so yes, you need to be prepared to be competitive and take bridge seriously but you can also come and develop your game and enjoy the experience and be better for the future. Every game is a learning experience and Pesta Sukan definitely adds to that.
Q. Would you encourage other social clubs to join this year? Why?
A: Absolutely! It’s a fun experience of great bridge that is very well run. What’s the worst that can happen? You may come last but you will have learnt something and had a great experience.
Q. Any tips for first-timers who might be nervous about taking part?
A: Take the plunge and enter and come along and take part. Anything new is scary the first time but everyone is friendly and supportive.
Q. What do you think people misunderstand about Bridge?
A: It’s only for old people - and Singapore is great at disproving that belief!
